This Community-Led Study Tour introduces you to a young nation where innovation, cooperation, and local leadership drive sustainable development. Through direct engagement with community initiatives, you witness how grassroots action strengthens both identity and opportunity.

Through collaboration, cultural exchange, and reflective learning, you connect with the people shaping Timor-Leste’s future. Workshops, field visits, and shared experiences reveal how education, agriculture, and marine conservation contribute to national renewal. These encounters highlight how communities transform challenge into opportunity through collective leadership. Day 1

Dili

Arrive in Timor-Leste’s capital and settle into your accommodation while becoming familiar with the city’s vibrant atmosphere. Orientation activities introduce the history, culture, and development journey of the nation. In the evening, gather with fellow participants and local hosts for a welcome dinner featuring traditional Timorese cuisine. Conversation introduces the theme of community resilience and sustainable development.

Day 2

Dili

Begin the morning with a cultural briefing that introduces Tetum language basics and local customs. Interactive activities encourage respectful engagement with communities throughout the program. In the afternoon, meet local educators and development practitioners who discuss Timor-Leste’s journey since independence. Evening reflection links these insights to global perspectives on sustainable development.

Day 3

Dili

Visit a social enterprise hub supporting youth and women-led initiatives. Conversations with entrepreneurs reveal how innovation strengthens employment and education opportunities. Participants explore how small enterprises address community needs while promoting sustainable practices. Reflection highlights the role of entrepreneurship in national development.

Day 4

Dili → Maubisse

Travel to the highlands of Maubisse where mountain landscapes provide a contrast to coastal Dili. Visit agricultural cooperatives that combine traditional knowledge with sustainable farming methods. Participants observe how food security and environmental stewardship support local livelihoods. Evening discussion focuses on resilience and adaptation in rural communities.

Day 5 to Day 6

Maubisse

Immerse yourself in rural community life through collaborative field activities. Guided sessions explore sustainable agriculture, cultural heritage, and community cooperation. Participants work alongside local families to understand how development initiatives operate in everyday practice. Evenings provide opportunities to share meals, stories, and music with community members.

Day 7

Maubisse → Dili → Atauro Island

Return to Dili before travelling by boat to Atauro Island, known for its exceptional marine biodiversity. Orientation introduces the island’s connection between conservation and community livelihoods. Discussions highlight how sustainable tourism supports environmental protection. Evening reflection prepares participants for marine conservation activities.

Day 8 to Day 9

Atauro Island

Work with local conservation teams to explore coral reef restoration and marine education projects. Participants learn how community stewardship protects biodiversity and supports sustainable fishing. Guided activities encourage reflection on ocean conservation and environmental responsibility. Cultural exchanges reveal the traditions and leadership of island communities.

Day 10

Atauro Island → Dili

Return to Dili and participate in a workshop exploring national planning and sustainable development partnerships. Participants collaborate in small groups to develop project concepts inspired by field experiences. Discussions highlight the importance of collaboration between communities and institutions. Evening reflection connects the program’s themes with future leadership.

Day 11

Dili

Present group ideas to local partners and receive feedback from community leaders. Conversations explore how development initiatives can adapt to changing social and environmental conditions. Participants reflect on the lessons learned through engagement with Timorese communities. The evening concludes with a farewell dinner celebrating shared experiences.

Dili

Participate in a final reflection session linking local experiences with global development goals. Discussion encourages participants to consider how the lessons of Timor-Leste can inform future leadership. Time is available for personal exploration or quiet reflection before departure. The program concludes with appreciation for the communities who shared their knowledge and hospitality.
